Why Didn’t I Get a Stimulus Check? 

There are a few possible reasons:

🧡 Nothing is wrong. Your check is still on the way and you will get it soon.

🧡 You need to sign up. In order to receive a check, one of these things must be true: 1) You signed up or 2) you filed taxes or 3) you were on Social Security in 2019. If none of those things are true for you, you need to sign up now. Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks

🧡 You are listed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes: Stimulus Checks for Adults Who Are Dependents

🧡 You are getting a paper check and it hasn’t been mailed yet. See schedules below.

🧡 Your application or tax return is still processing. Some returns are being very slow this year.

🧡 You filed taxes on paper. IRS has stopped processing paper returns. You can file electronically. If you filed in 2018, they will use that return

🧡 Your check went to the wrong place. Some people who filed taxes are having problems with checks being sent to old bank accounts or to tax preparation businesses. IRS states they are working on this problem.

🧡 There was a problem. Many reports of problems. The most common problem is the child’s payment missing. IRS states they are working on these problems. Stay tuned!

People on Social Security Who Don’t File Taxes

Social Security Administration is still processing payments. Many people on Social Security have not received their checks yet. Stay tuned. It may be coming soon.

People Who Filed Taxes

The first round of stimulus checks have gone out. First round went to people who either filed taxes or signed up for stimulus payments using TurboTax or FreeTax.

Even if you filed taxes or signed up, you may not have gotten your payment yet. They have not processed all returns yet, and they are sending payments out in rounds.

Many people reported that they did not receive checks. If this happened, there could be a few reasons:

  • The IRS has not yet processed your tax return this year.
  • The IRS did not have your bank information on file.
  • They sent your payment to an old bank account you no longer used.
  • You used a tax preparation service, which set up a temporary bank account that is now closed.

The IRS has stated that they are aware that many checks went to the wrong place and they are working on fixing this problem.

Paper Checks for People Who Filed Taxes

If IRS did not have your direct deposit bank information, they will send out a paper check. Checks will start being mailed this week and continue through September. People with lowest income will get their checks first. See the schedule of when checks get mailed.

Note: This schedule is only helpful if the IRS has actually processed your tax return. They are behind on processing returns, and paper returns are completely halted. If you filed in 2018, they may use that one instead.

IRS has also created a page where you can track your check: Get My Payment. Apparently, it does not work very well, and many people get error messages.

Stimulus Check Sign Ups on TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA

Some readers report that they have already received their checks. Payments were sent out at the same time as payments for regular tax payers. More rounds of payments will continue in the future.

Not everyone who signed up has gotten their check. In some cases, the IRS may still be processing your request. The IRS has not released a schedule for how quickly they are processing the TurboTax and FreeTax sign ups.

If you did not include direct deposit banking information, they will send out a paper check. Although it is not possible to guarantee when your case will be processed, some people will receive their checks at the same time as taxpayers: See the schedule of when checks get mailed.

Why Didn’t My Payment Include $500 for My Child?

  1. We asked an accountant to file a 2020 tax return for our disabled adult child. She received the current stimulus funds right away. Then the IRS sent a letter that she needs to confirm her identiity which was difficult for us as it could not be done online. Many attempts to call later we got this resolved and now we should receive the previous stimulus payments as well. We received approval for her DAC benefits which took about 11 months!!!

  3. i am on disability and i receive in my bank account automatically, $718 dollars a month (that”s around $8,616 a year).It’s August 20, 2020 and i have still not received a stimulus check. i qualify for the stimulus check. i have been calling and looking for an explanation from someone, but no one seems to be able to answer the question…Where is my stimulus check? any response will be greatly appreciated. thank you

  6. My husband sat on the phone for almost 2 hours. It appears there was a glitch in their system when trying to produce the debit cards. They’re working on fixing it and sending out paper checks to the 7 million people who never got their stimulus checks. Amazing, you don’t hear about that on the news or anywhere. And they won’t give you a date as to when it will be sent out either!!! 😡

  7. What if you had to mail in a paper form due to not having your irs pin and couldn’t receive it online and it hasn’t been processed yet will you still get one after the irs has finished with probing your identity and taxes or will you miss out????

  8. I am 70 and retired receiving social security retirement benefits automatically deposited in my bank account. I was told to do nothing and I have received nothing. When I went to the IRS get my payment site they said they have no information on my social security number.

I’ve searched everywhere but the answers I read say the same thing don’t do anything it is on the way. Everybody I’ve talked to has gotten a check even thou their situation is different than mine.   12. Still have NOT received my Economic Impact Payment. Currently receiving SSI via Direct Deposit. I am a US Citizen living in the Philippines, married and have Resident Alien Visa status here. I know of others here in the Philippines with similar situations and they have NOT received payment either.

    So far as I read eligibility, I AM eligible for payment

    Who or where can you actually CONTACT someone to find out what the problem is? The IRS “Get My Payment” tool is worthless: We are unable to provide the status of your payment right now because:

    We don’t have enough information yet (we’re working on this), or

  22. My husband and I are just regular tax payers (NO benefits of any kind) with a child and we are both eligible for relief. We filed a joint return this year before the original April 15th deadline, and soon as the first wave of stimulus deposits went through, his 1200 came in. Mine did not and has still not came in. I’m not getting a paper check because I have my DD set up, I’m totally eligible for my 1200 plus my child’s 500, and every time I check with the IRS get my payment, it just says payment status unavailable. I’m annoyed and irritated because the offices are closed, the irs number is nothing but pre-recorded messages, and I don’t want to wait all the way until September to find out that I’m not going to get one for whatever reason they come up with.

    Is anyone else stuck with a situation similar, your partner got their relief but you didn’t even though there’s nothing stopping you?

  27. Hi sleepy girl, I did the nonfiler around the second week of April I did it because I’m on ssi with 2 yr old. I believe I did it right. But I been extremely worried maybe there’s something wrong I called that eip phone number that has trumps signature on it. They said they could only answer questions couldn’t look up my SS#
    So I asked if I made error or if somebody fraudulently claimed me or my son would that be reason why I’m not seeing a check and the guy said they would reject the return. I really believe he said whatever to get me off the phone maybe u could help me with this

  28. I am on SSI and SSA. I have a Direct Express card I recieve my SSI on. I get a paper check for my SSA windows pension. I still have not recieved my Stimulus. I dont know what is wrong. I have been trying to get info EVERYWHERE, no help anywhere.

    4. My son who is 11 is on SSI and he still has not received his stimulus check. They stay recipients on SSI will automatically get theirs but my son has not. I can’t find any info on children under 18 who receive SSI. I have even put his info in the where’s my payment thing on the IRS site and they have no information. I registered myself and my 3 children at the end of the registration it said estimated stimulus amount is 3200 and I did not recieve for my kids I got a letter 3 weeks letter stating nothing about my kids just that congratulations you were accepted for 1200 so I have no idea what is going on n why I did not get $ for my children

The IRS has since approved the application. it’s been a week and I’m still waiting to see if I’m eligible. Am I still okay to get my $1200? The IRS has this stuff so backwards and as of today they put a number that you can call if you have questions and need help but there’s no actual person to answer your questions it just spouts the same information that their.gov website has.

  42. I don’t understand why people on SSI and SSDI are still waiting for a stimulus check. These are people that may have cognitive issues and it’s hard to understand why everyone they know has gotten it but they have not, these are some of our most vulnerable citizens are left in the dark. My brother lives 3,000 miles away and calls me every day asking if, when, how will he get the check. His SSDI benefits are automatically put on his card. According to the time schedule he should have gotten it by now. What do I tell him when the dates given change. I read that he would get his money by April 29 then May 5 it is now May 18 and still no check. He does not read or write and people keep telling he’s not getting one he doesn’t know what to believe what can I do to help him?

      SSA updated their website this morning and we finally have a date for direct deposit.

      How will the IRS send my economic impact payment (EIP) if I have a representative payee?

      Date: May 14, 2020

      If you filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return: Your $1,200 EIP was or will be sent to the bank account provided on your tax return for an electronic tax refund, or mailed to the address provided on your tax return if a tax refund was mailed or if there was no refund.

      If you did not file a 2019 or 2018 tax return:

      An Individual Representative Payee should receive from the IRS the EIP for their SSI recipient(s) by May 27 to the same direct deposit account or Direct Express card as the recipient’s monthly SSI payment. We are waiting for confirmation from the IRS when it will mail paper check EIPs to payees.

      For an Organizational Representative Payee, the schedule above is the same, except that the payee may receive the EIP electronically or by paper check in the mail.

    4. You Didn’t Get Paid for Your Dependents

      According to the CARES Act, individuals will receive an additional $500 per qualifying dependent as part of their stimulus payment. However, some individuals are reporting that they aren’t receiving this additional money that they’re entitled to, even after jumping through the necessary hoops required by the IRS.

      Many Social Security retirement, survivors or disability insurance benefits and railroad benefits beneficiaries, for example, don’t typically file tax returns. The Treasury Department guided these individuals to submit additional information, including information about qualifying dependents, through the IRS Non-Filers tool by April 22. Now, there are reports of these individuals not receiving their additional $500 per dependent, even when they followed the government’s instructions.

      The IRS’s solution for this might not be one you want to hear.

      “If you did not receive the full amount to which you believe you are entitled, you will be able to claim the additional amount when you file your 2020 tax return,” reads the IRS FAQ on Economic Impact Payments. This means these individuals won’t see the additional dependent money to which they’re entitled until 2021.

      There is one caveat that could explain why you haven’t received your money if you’re a Direct Express cardholder, though.

      3. I’m a Direct Express Card holder and didn’t receive the $500 for my 15 yr old daughter but did receive it for myself. I don’t file taxes so will I also have to wait until next year to get the money for my daughter? They have made a mess out of this whole thing especially for people who receive Social Security/SSI and veterans, they were the last to get this money and these are the people who need it the worst because of their income being so low. And on top of that they get screwed out of the money for their kids or have to wait a year for it when it’s needed now! Why doesn’t the guy that paid taxes and claimed his children have to wait? He got paid the $500 per child so why didn’t the ones who receive Social Security or SSI get paid for their kids? They’ve complicated things way more than it ever should have been. I hope I don’t have to wait until next year to receive the $500 for my daughter that would suck especially when I need it now! I don’t understand why they couldn’t have deposited her check onto my Direct Express Card along with mine, it would have been so much simpler! It just makes no sense to me and now a lot of families have to suffer because of ignorance.

We did use Turbo Tax as we do every year and are hoping that we are temporarily stuck in that glitch. We are not financially strapped, but $2900 is nothing to ignore. Some information about the software glitch would be great and/or a way that says when you put in your info, “You are not qualified” would make it easier than wondering.

    1. Ok i failed my non filer as soon as it came out was going to get in on my bank card 29th they rejected it sent it back to irs ok fine got the letter said i was just getting the 1200 and not the 500 for my child just isn’t right and still no update nor check in mail been way to long

    2. Did you check your TurboTax debit card? I just recently realize that that’s where my money went since the last time I filed they sent me a debit card from TurboTax with my money on there. So if you filed with TurboTax more than likely that’s where your moneys going to go to the debit account

  50. I’m on SSD and VA benefits. I submitted our info on the non-filer tool thru turbo tax on April 10th but on April 29th only $1200 came. I’ve read the info on this site and I hope they fix this issue because even my SSD payment is the same

My husband is on SS and he got his stimulus on April 29th and i know other people that are on SSDI and never ever worked and they all got there stimulus. I worked hard my whole life and because of arthritis had to go on SSDI at the age of 61

    3. I have been on SSI disability for 10 years and in July or August of last year I got taken off of it. Tried to file with the portal but apparently I have to have some identity pin number from the IRS you can get home before I can register on the portals. No way to get the pin number from the IRS so I can’t even file a tax return with my 1099-sa because I don’t have the pin number. on top of that I got divorced this year so my last name is not even the same. I’m so lost and I’ve been trying for three weeks to get ahold of someone at social security or the IRS and no one can help. Anyone know if they’ll automatically send it?

      2. I am in exact same situation… was getting disability for ten years, And lost that during a struggle to obtain an divorce from an abusive spouse while trying to care for 3 kids… no support, money for a lawyer, etc. And could no longer get medical attention bc I no longer had coverage.
        Anyway, I used the non-filers tool on the irs.gov site to file and apply for stimulus payment for myself and children…
        It was very fast and easy to do… and when I signed up, etc on the site, I was given a PIN # from the IRS then…. it’s so you don’t have to submit personal info and social security #’s, etc when corresponding, etc.
        If you haven’t done so… go to IRS.gov – Stimulus Relief/Corona (not sure title they used), once there, click on non-filers tool and it walks you thru it… you can sign up for a login, etc there as well- and you will receive a PIN
        I did get a payment deposited in my account about 3 wks later for 1200, however did not get the child stimulus payment (which I was desperately depending on for our bills, etc)… and trying to find out what to do or answers is impossible.
        As far as PIN…. Hope that helps for you … good luck and stay safe!!

      All SSI with representative payees will be May 27th. The way they normally receive their benefits.

  55. I am on ssi and awaiting stimulus I can only find out so little as to when the payment will actually go out . I’ve been using suntrust since I 1st started getting my ssi payments but switched to another suntrust bank will it still be deposited into my account or will I get a check and if so when will the begin mailing ssi stimulus checks I am so concerned I may not even end up getting 1 Ive heard by May 1st then it was May 8th now I’m hearing it could be May 15th I have no idea an there is very little to no info regarding anything I can’t even verify payment .

  59. I am just sick with worry. I get SSDI And SSI combined because when I first filed for disability some 30 years ago my SSDI payment was very low so I was supplemented with SSI.
    As of this morning, May 6 my Bank hasn’t posted the deposit of my Stimulus payment. I was counting receiving on it April 29 like everyone I know on SS or SSDI did.
    Can someone here please update me on what is the holdup and is there something I should do. btw, I have had direct deposit with the same Bank for over 15 years.

When I check to see when my check might come, it says: we can not determine your eligibility. I was going to fill out the Non Filter but one of the “DON’T FILE IF” is if you were married at the end of 2019 and are not filling this with your husband, STOP…..I need help

  63. I was wondering if I’m getting a stimulus check? I have a legal payee my mother and I’m on SSI and I have had the same payee for 15 years. My payee does not claim me as a dependent since I’m 48. My payee just checked the get my payment site and got a notice that her check is being mailed out to her even though she has a bank account that her ssi check goes into for the last 20 years. My SSI When I check get my payment it doesn’t show me as eligible or says I’m typing in the wrong info. Which I’m not. Then locks me out for 24 hours. I’m so confused. Can anyone help answer my question please.

  65. I’m 35 years old. I draw disabled adult child social security survivor benefits from my father’s claim record since my father is deceased. I don’t file taxes. I checked the get my payment app and I get the status payment not available.

    Should I just assume that the IRS considers me a dependent even though I live alone and take care of my own business.

    1. It should happen automatically if case has been reported and is being pursued by your state child support office. If not, you’d need to look into getting the case on their list for future years.
