Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks

You can sign up for a stimulus check even if you have $0 in income. Anyone can sign up, as long as you have not been claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes.

For people on Social Security: Ignore everything you’ve read. Some people on Social Security need to sign up. Some don’t. Who Needs to Sign Up?

Below are three options for sites where you can sigh up. Some reader’s report running into technical problems or error messages. If one site doesn’t work for you, choose a different one. They are all the same.

If you are still waiting for your check, you may be wondering: Why Didn’t I Get a Stimulus Check? When Will It Come?

IRS TOOL

IRS has launched a new tool for people who do not normally file taxes. Simple IRS form for stimulus checks. Reader’s Tips:

  • It will bump you to a third party site that gives the impression that people on Social Security should not use this tool. Not true. The IRS and Social Security Administration are both clear that some people on Social Security still need to sign up and should use this tool. Social Security Explains Why Some People On Social Security Need to Sign Up
  • Some people are having trouble using this site on cell phones. Try selecting “desktop view” or use one of the other sites instead.
  • It asks for a state ID or driver’s license. If you don’t have one, you can leave that blank

TURBO TAX TOOL

You can also sign up using TurboTax: Sign Up for Your Stimulus Check. Reader’s Tip:

  • The TurboTax page will be given two options to sign up: “If you haven’t filed your taxes yet this year” or “If you don’t need to file taxes this year.”
  • If you are on SSDI or another form of Social Security, click the first link: “If you haven’t filed your taxes yet this year”
  • If your only income is SSI, click the second link. “You don’t need to file taxes this year.” If the form asked you for information from your 1099, or if it tells you that you have to print and mail a paper form, this means you’ve chosen the wrong option. Go back and choose “if you don’t need to file taxes this year.”
  • If you are not sure: How to Tell What You’re On

FREE TAX USA TOOL

  1. Hello,
First, thank you for all this information. Maybe you can guide me… My mom receives ssdi and has for several years. SSDI and pension is her only “income” and she does not file taxes. It is converting to just SSI in July. She is 65 no young children, dad passed in April due to covid, if that makes a difference. She has not received her stimulus check yet, and the site continues to give no update, Should I file at freetaxusa for her so she can get her check? Given circumstances, she could really use the help of the stimulus check right now. Her information on SS is all up to date on correct. Thank you for your help, it’s very much appreciated.

  3. I didnt update my social security when i did my citizenship because i thought it was automatically done from when i had my green card. i called and they told me that my check was not going to be process and i will get a tax credit? The IRS guy was very rude and didnt give me a clear answer when i asked him what did he mean? he hung up on me when i asked for his name and supervisor. What type of treatment is this for people that do their taxes? I am going to contact my rep and my senators, this is madness and i think everyone that works for the government needs to go back to work. We, the people pay your salaries and you guys should be back to do the service that you are were hired for.

    2. Alicia did their father claim them on his taxes? Or did anyone else? Did you? All these are important if you have not filed because you have not worked then you need to follow the link above and show you don’t need to file taxes but you need to request 2 checks on the behalf of your children. If you did work file your taxes and claim the girls and then you will get a check for them as well.

  5. How do you claim your babies that you have full custody of and the missing dad is getting their stimulus money because he claimed them on his previous taxes and is keeping the stimulus money for the 4 and 5 year old. How do you correct this problem? It is not right he has never paid child support or helped with schooling clothing nothing. He doesn’t even see them except if they are lucky 2 to 3 times per year and usually for only 1 day at that. Their Mom is single parent. This is a Great Grandma of the boys asking. This just isn’t right.

    1. I am in the same boat. I have sole custody of my 2 kids and it even states in the agreement hes not to file my kids on his taxes. I have a restraining order as well. I didnt file taxes for 2018 but I am sure he claimed them even know he wasnt suppose to do that. 2019 I claimed them He seem them once in the last 2 years. Even before then I was the one who worked and took care of them. He hasn’t paid a dime in child support and even before that was in place he never provided for nothing. And here I am raising my 2 kids alone while hes sitting their collecting their money….

    2. I know this isn’t what you will want to hear but if you apply for child support enforcement on him then every year his tax returns and any stimulas checks or anything (besides inheritence or a settlement) will ALL be sent to you. If they find they actually owe him for several years of taxes or something random like winning the lottery. He doesn’t see one red cent until his entire back child support is paid. If none of those things happens and he continues to not pay they will report it on his credit, *Say he makes approx $2500 of HOH credit on each child he claims (if he makes around 30k) You can ALSO make a claim with the IRS that you have the right to claim your children, and because they never see him or spend any overnights at him or his home, he is qualified to claim them. The IRS will re-issue you the funds based off your tax returns. Than he will owe the IRS whatever he was given from them. On top of that when you get a child support order established (I am guessing you do not have a child support order or I assume you would have been in contact by CS enforcement. Because they will intercept his tax returns, eventually non payment will lead to going back to court and being told he has to pay an additional $150 every month towards his back child support owed from not paying. So typically a few years later this leads to his license being suspended. Then if he still is not paying, they will eventually order us to court where he is a chance to offer me an amount of money (a portion of the back child support debt and I could leave the court house with that money in my hands (tempting when you have never had any kind of child support) I personally accepted the money, the first time! Then I realized by doing that he took it as a slap on the wrist. He decided to continue to not pay. So I decided next time I wouldn’t take anything but the full amount. Because I thought spending time in jail would make him come to his senses and begin paying. I can’t tell you how disappointing it was when he was ordered to 180 days in the local Jail or he would have to pay of his entire debt. Usually by this time they are several thousand dollars behind in child support. (He was like 14k behind) However, his mother contacted her sisters and brothers and they came together and come up with the money and he never even went to the jail his mom had it paid and they left the courthouse together just a few minutes after I left.. Boy it took 2 years to get to that point (only for him to be so quickly bailed out) he again gets a slap on the wrist when I Imagined for the first time he would face some actual consequences he would have to deal with. Wow don’t even know where all that came from 🤯😄

  7. I am trying to help my brother get his stimulus check. He does not work. (He should be on disability). I’m just trying to help him. Can someone, ANYONE please tell me where to go to do this?? Now, he would be a non-filer meaning he has no income to file taxes on. NO dependents! But he does need to get into the system to be able to get his share of the money. He does stay with our mother and helps her by doing small odd jobs. Nothing much to speak of but it does help her. Can anyone please let me know where to go…PLEASE!!?? IF possible can you send me a link??
Thank you ever so much in advance…Kat

    1. Did you say you are on Snap Benefits and have no income?
Thats ok you can still file with the links provided above for a stimulus check (use the one that allows you to choose no tax return and that you want to request your stimulis without filing taxes. From my understanding?

      1. You said your disabled do you get SSDI or SSI payments? If you do, from my understanding you need to go to one of the pages listed above and request your check. I am disabled and get social security and so do both my kids 10 and 14. I did not claim either of my taxes because I don’t work or file taxes. I got my stimulis check (I did not get the $500 for each of my kids) I did randomly just got a 1200 payment from the treasury in my daughter’s account. So I did not have to do anything since we all were already getting direct deposit from SSDI. We got our money last week and today.

  9. I receive SSDI benefits check and my daughter is my Rep Payee, however, she added me as a dependent in 2018 but NOT for 2019. She has not filed 2019 taxes yet. She also already received her check, obviously, the stimulus bill looked at her 2018 returns. Being that the stimulus looks at 2018 & 2019 depending on a person’s situation, Am I still eligible to receive the $1200 in May – she will NOT add me as a dependent for 2019?

    1. The PRESIDENT extended taxes until July however I believe all you have to do is follow the links above to request your check. All you have to do is go to the 1 website that asks you if you would like to file, but you can select no to filing but still request your stimulis. I believe if your daughter DID claim you this year you probably wouldn’t have received a stimulis check. So that’s a plus.

  11. I filed my “stimulus only”2019 tax return with my son as a dependent on free tax USA . I later filed a non filing firm on the IRS website too. The IRS rejected their form because I filed on Free tax USA a week prior.

I received a stimulus check for myself only. My dependent amount was missing in my bank account. My disabled son receive ssi on direct Xpress card.

Do you think that is why IRS excluded the $500 from my stimulus check today? I do not know how to inform IRS about the missing 500 due their system rejecting previous filers for 2019.

    2. Also my children have their own accounts for their SSI payments because I am disabled, and I got a stimulus for myself direct deposited in my bank account like my payments are. Both of my kids were claimed by their fathers. Maybe your daughters payment will go onto the card she has? I know my daughter got a $1200 stimulus in her account today. I think there habe to be contributing factors to that but not sure yet so I 🤔 will get that figured out. I would think your child’s payment will be directly deposited the same way her disability payments are made. I think!

  12. I’m a single mom and don’t work. My 17 yr old son receives SSDI on a Direct Express card and I’m his payee. Will we get the $1,200 plus the child payment or does only get the $500. Do I need to sign up or will it automatically go on the card? He is also owed Child support. Will he receive that too? I’m so confused!

  15. I am on SSDI and have NOT yet received stimulus direct deposit for myself or my spouse or my kids. I did file 2019 taxes. U R saying we need to sign up for our kids. I went to IRS website, but there are only 2 links. One to check the status which says they don’t have my information and the other link is for non filers. Where should I add my kids. The other link for non filers is used to file taxes if U have not filed them.
