🌷 If you or your kids haven’t received a check yet: Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks

🧡 Below is all information currently available. Things could change. We are continually updating this page. Please check back. For more updates, you can also join our Facebook Page.

Who Will Get a Check?

  • If your income is less than $75,000 per year, you are eligible
  • More than $75,000, your check will be lowered or eliminated
  • You must have a Social Security number
  • If you are over age 16, you cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes. There are a few exceptions for 17 and 18 year olds and adults.

How Much Will the Checks be For?

  • $1,200 for adults
  • $500 for children age 16 and under

When Will My Check Come?

Checks are going out in batches. The timing of your check depends on a few different factors: When Will My Check Come?

IRS has created a page where you can track your check: Get My Payment

The tool does not work for everyone. It only works for people who either filed taxes or signed up for a check. However, it also does not work for some of those people. Don’t worry if you get a message that information is not available. This is common.

What Do I Do If There’s a Problem?

🧡 Stimulus payments have started arriving and it is a giant mess! Most common problems reported by our readers:

  • getting no check
  • getting a check for adults, but child’s payment missing
  • getting messages that checks will be sent by mail, but then receiving them by direct deposit
  • check’s being sent to wrong bank accounts

🧡 Stay tuned. The treasury department has not yet released information on how to resolve these problems. In some cases, there is no problem, your check just hasn’t been sent yet: Why Didn’t I Get a Stimulus Check? When Will It Come?

🧡 If you are having problems, CNN has suggested to handle it this way: “The IRS will send a confirmation letter via mail within 15 days. This letter will explain the amount of your stimulus check and how to report any issues with the payment. You can use that information when the letter comes to report any discrepancies.”

🧡 Note: The IRS is sending out letters by mail. Not by email, text or phone call. If you receive an email text or phone call, it may be a scam.

Why Didn’t My Child Get a Check?

Many people are reporting that they received checks, but child’s payment was missing. Learn more: Why Didn’t My Child Get a Check?

Will People on Disability Get Checks?

Yes. If you meet the criteria listed above, you are eligible. Some people on Social Security will need to sign up. Some won’t. See details below.

Will People Applying for Disability Get Checks?

Yes. If you meet the criteria listed above, you are eligible. If you did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019, you will need to sign up: Three Places to Sign Up

Will People with No Income Get Checks?

Yes. If you meet the criteria listed above, you are eligible. If you did not file taxes in 2018 or 2019, you will need to sign up: Three Places to Sign Up

What Happens to Dependents?

A dependent is anyone who is claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes.

  • In most cases, dependents under age 17 will get $500
  • In most cases, dependents age 17+ will get $0

There are some exceptions!

I’m On Social Security. Do I Need to Sign Up?

Most people on Social Security will automatically get payments and don’t need to do anything. However, you may still need to sign up if one of these things are true:

  • You have children under 17 or
  • You first started receiving Social Security after January 1, 2020.

What if I Already Mailed in a 2019 Tax Return?

The IRS has stopped processing paper tax returns. If you filed on paper in 2019, they will use your 2018 return instead. Another option is to file taxes electronically, or to sign up for a stimulus check: Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks

What Happens if I Owe Child Support?

If you owe past due child support, in some cases, your check may be used for the child support. See details below.

What if I Owe Taxes?

If you owe taxes, this has no impact on your check. In addition, if you are disabled, you might find something on this page helpful: How to Get Tax Breaks for Disabilities

What if I Owe Student Loans?

If you owe student loans, this has no impact on your check. In addition, you might find something on this page helpful: Help with Student Loans in the Time of Coronavirus

Will the Stimulus Check Impact HUD, Vouchers, and Section 8?

No. One-time lump sum payments never count as income for HUD. What Counts in HUD Housing

Will the Stimulus Check Impact Other Benefits?

No. The stimulus checks are being structured as tax refunds (even if you paid no taxes). Tax refunds do not count against food stamps, SNAP, CalFresh, Medicaid, TANF, SSI, healthcare marketplace credits, and most other government programs.

The stimulus check also will not count if it makes your bank account too high (it doesn’t count for 12 months).

Want official confirmation? Look here: Congressional Research Services Summary and 26 U.S. Code § 6409 and Fact Sheet from House Committee on Ways and Means

Which Tax Return Will They Use?

Treasury Department previously stated that checks would be based on 2019 tax returns, and only use 2018 if 2019 was not filed. Reader’s report that this is not true, and they are using the 2018 first for some people.

Which tax return they use can be significant for parents. It can impact whether your child gets a check if your child is now 17 or 18. It can also impact which parent receives the check, if parents are divorced or file separately. Stimulus Checks Tips for Parents

Bank Accounts

IRS has created a page where you can track your check: Get My Payment.

The tool does not work for everyone. If it works for you, you can use this tool to add a bank account (or check to make sure your check is going to the bank account where you want it to go).

Reader’s tip: If using the new IRS tool to change your bank account number, they site may accept your bank number if you choose “savings” instead of “checking.”

“I Don’t Have a Bank Account”

For people on Social Security: The payment will go wherever your normal Social Security check goes (Direct Express card, or to your representative payee’s account)

Not on Social Security: You will be mailed a paper check. It may take longer to get your check.

Need a bank? The fastest and easiest way to get your stimulus check is to have a bank account. If you’ve been been turned down when you tried to open a bank account, you might try one of these second chance banks.

Can Debt Collectors Take Your Check?

🧡 If your stimulus check goes into a bank account where you owe the bank money, the bank may be able to automatically take your check. Read more.

🧡 You may wish to use a bank account that debt collectors don’t have access to. Or to take the money out of the account if there is time (if you owe money to the bank, it may be immediate).

🧡 Unlike Social Security payments, stimulus checks are not protected from debt collectors. Learn more about How to Deal with Debt & Disability

Where Will I Get My Check? Bank Account? Direct Express Card?

If your check is sent through Social Security, it will go wherever your normal social security payment goes (bank or Direct Express Card).

If you filed taxes or signed up for a stimulus check, it will go to whatever bank information you listed. If you listed no bank, you will get a paper check.

Where Can I Learn More About Adult Dependents?

Updates for adults who are dependents. Information on: Adults On Social Security, Parents Who Have Guardianship, Parents Who are Caregivers, People with Representative Payees, and People Collecting Social Security through a Parent. Stimulus Checks for Adults Who are Dependents

What if I’m On Social Security and have a Representative Payee?

🧡 Many readers are writing to ask what happens if they have a representative payee for their disability check. The answer is: Nothing. Having a payee has no impact on stimulus checks. All that matters if whether or not you were claimed as a dependent on taxes or on stimulus sign up forms.

🧡 For people with payees, where does your stimulus check go? If you signed up using the IRS tool, your check will go to whatever bank account you listed, or if you didn’t list one, you’ll be mailed a paper check. If you didn’t sign up, then your check will go to wherever your Social Security payment usually goes. Where Can I Find Reliable Info?

Many news sources are continuing to print misleading or inaccurate information about the stimulus checks. Here’s where you can find accurate reliable info: Democrat’s Statement on Cash payments to Americans and this IRS page and this Fact Sheet from House Committee on Ways and Means. And Social Security Announcement about Stimulus Checks.

In the documents above, it’s important to keep in mind that any reference to “Social Security Disability Income” or “Social Security Benefits” does not include SSI. That is referring to SSDI or other forms of Social Security only.

I got a check in the mail yesterday may 4th but it was for only 1200. I don’t know if that is my finances cause I am his payee or if it is mine but if it’s mine then why didn’t I get the full 1700 cause I added my 3 year old son. This is so confusing and we have no one to talk to about this. Will his check come under my name because I am his payee or will it come under his name? He also gets his check on a direct express debit card and when i filled the non filers form I added my debit card information. Any help??

    2. I am also wondering this. My son is an adult disabled child. When his dad retired he was forced off of disability and now collects regular SSI. I am also the rep payee for him. I have been paid, 2 weeks ago. His fiance was paid weeks ago and his father just on May 1 now gets message that his check was MAILED ( why? He has direct deposit for SSI every month) but nothing on my son. No place to get help. He lives on less than $800 a month with two babies!
He needed this money and we all do, and a hell of a lot more, we go to jail if we don’t pay our taxes. Taxes that are to be used to PROTECT THE CITIZENS. We need to get paid monthly or weekly until it is 100 percent safe to congregate. This can only be done but stimulus and moratoriums on rent, mortgage, debt of any kind and utilities in addition to a stimulus. Not opening back up to kill tens of thousands if not more.
So where the f#$k is my sons money?

  19. After my 70 year old older sister (retired, SSI income only- no pensions/retirement funds) suffered a major medical event in Oct 2019 and became physically and mentally incompetent, I was court appointed to be her legal guardian of both her “estate” (no REAL estate) and personal assets. We shared an apartment together before this tragedy occurred and she is still listed on the lease until this coming October. I went through hell jumping through all of Medicaid’s hoops since Dec 2019 and she was FINALLY approved this past month. Am I obligated to turn her stimulus check over to Medicaid to supplement her care at the nursing home or will I be able to use it toward bills to repair her vehicle in hopes of getting it sold. It hasn’t run since before she became ill. I can’t afford to fix the car on my own and since I have full and absolute control of her bank account, I am thinking I will just deposit her check into my account and get he car fixed. Whatever’s left over I can transfer.

He filed taxes in 2018, his stimulus check should come to my address, but I’m trying to figure out how to get it to him. He doesn’t even have any ID. He’s lost it a dozen times. I’m thinking I may have to just return the check to the IRS. No way would I, or could I, cash it. That’s fraud. I wonder how long the check is valid. I’m hoping he’ll come home some day.

If you are his payee, it would be best to contact social security and let them know he is in jail. You may owe some money back. It might be a good idea for you to contact your local free legal aide program for help with this situation.

When he is released, he can reapply for social security. https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10133.pdf

But it is supposed to be turned back into social security. And if a person dies you have to turn it back in. Even if they have bills in their name. I know. Better safe than sorry. Just know people who have been in these situations. They overpaid and underpaid me and my husband when he went in nursing home and qhen he got out. But they finally got it straightened out and garnished our checks for 58$ each each. Month. 10 percent o s the rate they can garnish. Good luck.

One person even made a comment to where we may have to file next year to get it, which doesn’t make sense since we had done it thru Free Tax USA already. I hope they fix this problem we shouldn’t have to be waiting. I know they said if you didn’t use the Non Flier form that would happen but we are not in that bracket because we did it.

Do I still need to do the non filer form for her even though she also receives the 1099 form? Thanks in advance.

  25. I’ve had no income and live on my husbands social security. He is 66 and was on Social Security disability for several years before he turned 65. Our 18 year old daughter will be 19 in May and receives money as a beneficary on her dads social security disability. It’s her only income, she receives a check monthly from social security which will stop in June this year. I did go to the IRS website to fill in my non-filer information. My question is will our daughter get the stimulous check and if so will it be automatically or should she fill out the non filer information. My husband or myself do not file and are not required to because of our very low income so does that mean our daughter is not a dependent even though she receives the child payment from her fathers ssdi? Thank you so much.

        1. Well, I fear you are vastly overestimating my knowledge on this one 🙂

If she supports herself 51%, typically she can be considered not a dependent. If her auxilary benefits are high enough.

However, I do not know if an 18 year old is automatically considered a dependent according to IRS rules. (if she was 18 in 2019). Perhaps that is something you could research?

Update: H&R block seems to think that the social security income from auxilary benefits is hers not dad’s. That would support the idea of her supporting herself, but I still don’t know if being 18 cancels that out: https://www.hrblock.com/tax-center/filing/dependents/social-security-dependent-benefits/

I’m honestly not sure how this would be treated. If you feel she qualifies as not being a dependent, she could file her own simple tax form to see if that triggers a payment (the non-filers form is for people who don’t receive social security).

Or, if she’s dependent last year, but not currently, she can file her own tax form at the end of 2020 and receive her check then. Again, she’d need to meet IRS criteria for not being a dependent.

          1. Thank you for your research. Before she turned 18, we’d have to fill out a form telling SSA how we spent the money we received for her. After she turned 18, they no longer did that and switched from depositing her money in a separate deposit into my husbands checking account to mailing her a check monthly. I’m thinking she will automatically get one if she is eligible. Every time I’ve checked our stimulous payment status on the IRS website it says payment status not available. I guess it can’t hurt for her to file taxes. And I love your website!

(I receive SSDI through my now deceased dad’s earnings, so I get a 1099, I did put that on the stimulus form on free tax USA + bank info.)

I just want to make sure I do everything needed to get both checks. ($1200 + the child $500).

    1. Everything I’ve read is SSDI recipients will get their checks Direct Deposited in late April, SSI folks will get their sometime in early to mid May. And that is also according to the IRS FAQ’s that I’ve read.

However, if you have dependents that you take care of, then you need to file the Non-Filers form. Otherwise you don’t need to do anything, as Social Security will be doing the DD or mailing of checks, NOT the Treasury Department for those on Social Security, including SSDI, SSI and Regular Retirement benefits.

Most all of this is all in their FAQ area under the Coronavirus Economic Impact area of the irs.gov website. I’m really surprised that no one seems to be reading these facts that have been updated several times.

I go back to the FAQ’s almost daily to check what’s changed, lots of great info there.

And as for this: Another option is to file again electronically. If you don’t usually file taxes: Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks
This is also covered and the IRS says DO NOT DO THIS if you’ve already filed a paper tax return, it could cause problems for you down the road.

Please go and read their FAQ page that does answer a lot of the questions that are popping up lately.

      Their FAQ is here:

I live in New England with a room mate, as my $783 a month payment is not enough to rent a studio apartment which usually go for $1000 + or more a month. If I tried this on my own, I would be living in a cardboard condo. My room mate wanted me to afford basic necessities besides my room and board. I pay $575, which leaves me with about $200 to buy whatever my food stamps won’t cover, any medical expenses that are out of pocket, toiletries, etc. Now when I got sick with cancer and couldn’t work anymore, and then went through my wait for disability, my room mate kept me going for three years. When it comes time to file taxes, I am listed as a dependent, even though we are not related, as my room mate has never booted me out on the street or let me go without medical care or medication. It’s up to the payee to decide which account if you didn’t request a certain account. I would get help and file myself and get the money deposited into the account I wanted it in. 60. I receive SSI and my adult son receives both SSI and SS. From what I gather he would automatically get a check deposited, but not 100% certain since he falls under the disabled category and the SS he receives comes from his deceased fathers paid taxes. Also, I was hit by SS almost 2 years ago saying that they had overpaid me and said I had to repay them over $7,000 and started taking money from my monthly check immediately. I filed for an appeal to go before the Federal courts because after rebuking their reasons, which went from one thing to another and then finally saying their reason was that since I’m my son’s care taker and his check is deposited into my checking account that they view that as money accessible to me. However, despite my request for the appeal they have totally ignored my request and to date; they do not respond to my letters and phone calls regarding my appeal request and continue to take money from my check every month. Will they stop taking that deduction with all that’s happening now or will that remaining debt be cleared under these circumstances? Will his money be deposited in to my account as his care giver and can SS view that as more cash accessible to me and demand more money back from me? Also, where can I get the paperwork to file with the IRS for myself and my son if he is required to file as well?

My son is 17 and on disability I have not claimed in him in almost 5 years. I have done my taxes for the last five years but not this year. Being he is disabled he doesn’t do his own taxes. I have not filed with him because I didn’t want that to mess with his social security. So my question is, is he considered an adult? Will he get any money where his social security payments are received?

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service today announced that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an Economic Impact Payment. Instead, payments will be automatically deposited into their bank accounts.

I was approved for BOTH SSDI and SSI and received my first set of payments last month. My question is will I still get a stimulus in this situation? Also, Is there something I should do? I have read if you have SSDI or both you dont have to file a return and I havent filed a return since the 2017 tax year. I just want to be sure since I didnt start to get payments until THIS year although the backpay will go back to 2017. Thank you so much I would really appreciate some guidance!

  75. I have been on SSDI since 2016 and I have Medicare. My Extended Period of Eligibility ended in mid-2018 but I am enrolled in a rehabilitation program through the state that will be over in 2021. Thanks to that rehabilitation program, I believe it is the reason for me to still be considered disabled, in addition to my medical condition.
During my EPE and up to recently, I was working PT and making over the threshold limit, so I was not being paid benefits for those months. My Medicare has continued.
I am currently not working due to the impact of the corona virus and I know that I will be receiving the stimulus check that everyone is talking about (I file taxes).
Now, here is my question: Given that I have a small business that I don’t want it to die during this COVID-19 situation, is it advisable for me as a disabled person who works PT to apply for a sole proprietor ELDL loan to use in paying marketing services and equipment (no hiring employees)? Would this loan be an income that Social Security would consider a no no and stop my benefits? Would the lender or the SBA deny me the loan since I am receiving disability benefits? I especially care about not losing my Medicare benefits. Since I have been making money over the threshold limit, I haven’t gotten money from SSDI but they have kept my Medicare.
I would appreciate any good advice on this matter.

  82. I am livid and sad that those of us on disability only get the one time $1200 stimulus check. What is that going to do for us other than basically allow us catch up on our bills only to be in the same boat in a few months? If you are already on unemployment, for some reason or have to go on unemployment because your job had to close because of the virus you will get your weekly check PLUS $600 extra per week to make up for the percentage loss. We on disability only get a percentage of what we were making when we could work, but we just have to deal with that. Why not give us a couple hundred extra a check so we can stimulate the economy too? Thing is we would purchase necessary items that we can’t afford now. It makes me sick to hear what those who are married, getting $2400, plus $500 for each child, is going to do with their “windfall” . Many of them will also be getting unemployment.

I know of a small business owner who is doing very well, has lots of work, not laying anyone off, throws huge amounts of money around like it’s nothing, is applying for a grant to pay his workers.

Why are we, the ones on disability, who would give anything to be able to work, and can’t due to no fault of our own, the ones who get left behind or not thought of?

I lost my home trying and waiting to get on disability. There wasn’t anything around to help me keep my home, but there are provisions now, and I am glad for those people, it’s awful losing your home, and there was help before for them when the banks went haywire, but not for me.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a heartbreaking, devastating thing that is happening right now and I agree that the Stimulus Package is needed. I just don’t understand why there isn’t anything more to help the disabled out that practically live in poverty everyday.
    Rant over!

Before this COVID-19 fiasco, my mom already filed taxes (in January or February!) and claimed me as a dependent. I believe she already received a check for filing. I know I will not receive a check because of this- am I still eligible if I file a return, or should I not do that? My family is doing okay financially (thankfully) so I don’t *need* the money like many do. Just curious as to the best course of action. Thanks!

      1. Wow your full of useful information so let’s see if you can shed some light on my issue , so first of all I haven’t been able to work for about 4 years now I probably haven’t filed taxes in about 8 years , any way I’m considered disabled too the state off mn , and have been fighting for disability insurance for probably 2 or more years finally have a court date after being denied several times well guess my court date will be push out now , any way iv been getting help with housing and food through the state I’m poor but I’m lucky too get the help I do !! After being homeless over and over again and bouncing or living In my van that’s not fun I’m MN cause in the summer it gets way to hot and the 20 below weather in the winter bad times , I have a place to live now finally , only cause the state found me as being disabled , it because of a mix of things my back is so messed up I’m never comfortable had one back surgery but just gets worse , and told he don’t think another will make anything better and to just not do the things that cause the pain , I don’t work already how much more could I not do !! And I also had to major surgery s 2016 2017 because I got a deadly infection in my large intestines / colon , I no longer have the bag but I lost all but a couple feet of my large intestines, that effects me a great deal as I get major gut pain if I eat Im stuck in bathroom so I don’t if I plan to be out where crapping my pants would be embarrassment, I’m dehidrated all the time no matter how much I drink cause with no colon I sweat it out or piss it out to fast so not eating regularly that all causes me more fatigue the mix of my back legs and guts it’s a fight every day, and I have mental health needs on top of that there is PTSD, MAJOR DEPRESSION DISORDER , there are others, think iv explained my disability situation , so when I could not work any more I got my child support put on a hold cause I can’t pay it if I can’t make it , feel bad about that as well my kids are adults but I still owe a bunch of back child support, so was wondering since they have it all on hold and I’m getting help through the state and county because of my disabilities and am working with a lawyer to get my SSI or SSDI ,I haven’t had to file taxes but I was told to do it so I filed so I would get a relief as well . I just don’t know where I fall in here cause it’s not my fault I can’t pay child support and a small check like that would make a huge difference in my life I could pay for some car insurance, by clothes and things I need , cause I get help with food and a place to live but there is nothing left over ever so I and others can’t afford to drive by clothes pay Insurance ect and even for dads who owe back child support rite now who normally could work to pay child support but is unable now to no fault of theres they we are just as affected by this FLUED up world just like the rest of us it should be ment for all of us that need it right now even dad’s who struggle with making child support payments , do you think I should talk to my child support worker and my county workers and see if they can stop it from being taken, I don’t know what to think , I kinda went on alot but this stuff can be hard to explain , tell me what you know and what you think , thanks for all your info was helpful even though im not sure I have a chance in hell to catch a break even when it’s not ment as income just and we don’t have to pay it back , so if it’s not income how can they take it for child support , I think in most cases like getting your refund from your income tax should go to back child support if you owe it but this a gov stimuls check to help the economy and personal set backs due to the flu , ok I’m just gonna end it there cause I’ll just keep trying to make my point and I’m not looking for people to agree just think it stinks for any one who is going to have more support added up cause there not working and the stimuls to get them some relief is taken like it’s something you earned , child support comes from your earned income and the amount you pay a month I’d determined by your income and there income and the emount of kids , so In my mind for those who collect child support and get this stimuls check they should also be treated like it’s income and lesson the amount of support that one would normally pay , it sucks owe child support but to take a stimuls away from a dad who more then likely will now be behind thousand more before the end of all this , think about it people, that’s how I feel, I’m just looking to see if there will be away that I can get it still get mine being I’m not able to work and my child support has been on hold for 4 years yes I still owe support, there is nothing some people can do about it , you don’t decide to have kids thinking your not gonna be able to work and take care of them financially it’s a cruel world we live in were not always able to meet our obligations for many reasons , by now , ps sorry about the spelling and grammar and all that came came with this question turned rant .. lol be safe all it’s a FLUED up world we are living in

  91. It’s critical those on SSI need to file. Very helpful information is on r/SocialSecurity reddit threads.
Here’s the gist, I have seen people reporting earnings of Lottery Tickets with a 1099-MISC or people using the 1099-K Self Employed Service Gig section. Reporting $20 earning from babysitting will register an Adjusted Gross Income. With this AGI the eFile option for H&R unlocks.

These steps are not only critical for SSI recipients it also fulfills the problem stay at home parents/caregivers face who do not have a taxable “job”. Any reported earnings $1 or more is required for eFiling. DO NOT MAIL these otherwise offices are all closed and people will be waiting months down the road for this to be ironed out.

SS Retirees and SSDI are the only ones safe with no further steps. However, these articles were informative suggesting waiting on SSA interaction with IRS will only delay further.

Just put $1 in the box for your income. I guess that gives the system something to work with? Anyway, it’s supposed to be the solution.

    Like

    1. The IRS themselves recommended that in a previous stimulus payout. I tried to report zero income but the system rejected. I changed it to $1 and that was rejected. When I reported $20 income it was accepted. It’s best to have help with experience if possible. The info must be entered correctly and I’m not sure if the same e file service will allow you to keep changing it once it’s rejected and tells you to mail the paper form in. Imo mailing it in will only send you deeper into the rabbit hole with even more problems and a longer waiting time. Just imagine if they put the 5 billion (4 million ssi stimulus checks) into a account that draws interest. Much incentive to drag it out as long as possible.
