Shameka Gets Her Spot Back on the Section 8 Waiting List

Art: Robin Mead

When Shameka was removed from the Section 8 waiting list, she took some smart steps and got herself back on. Shameka reached out for help to her local legal aide program, and friends at the Disability Self-Advocacy HUD Facebook group and then sent an accommodation request to her Housing Authority.

One month later, Shameka got put back on the waiting list at the spot she would be at if she had never been taken off. Six month later, she got a voucher.

Shameka’s Accommodation Request

Dear Housing Authority,

I am requesting a reasonable accommodation to be put back on the waiting list.

I am on SSI and I have a disability which causes delays in memory and processing. My disability makes it more difficult for me to complete the housing process.

This housing application process has caused much confusion and I’m unable to remember the date I requested a change of address with the Housing Authority. However, I also changed my address with the post office and do not understand why this wouldn’t have forwarded to me even if the information never corrected in the Housing Authority’s system. In, May, June and July when I called to check my status, I was told to expect a packet and told I would not be removed from the waiting list.

Given my disabilities and my difficulties with applications and forms, I am requesting this accommodation. Included with this request is a letter from my doctor supporting that I am a disabled person in need of reasonable accommodations.

  1. Hello,

We had such a hard time finding housing for a relative that her voucher expired; I miraculously found your site, and used the advice here to write a request for an extension. This worked, and incredibly the next week a unit we’d been waiting on approved her for move in. Thank you so very much for setting up this website. We truly appreciate it.
