Sample Letters Requesting Overlapping Assistance for Housing Voucher

There are two letters below:

  1. Letter requesting overlapping assistance (not disabled)
  2. Letter requesting overlapping assistance as a disability accommodation

The second letter is more likely to be approved, but both will be considered.

LETTER ONE

Dear So and So,

I am requesting overlapping assistance for my voucher while moving.

I am requesting assistance in my new apartment to begin on xyz, and assistance in my old apartment to end on xyz…..OR… I am currently in process of locating a place to move and am writing to get written confirmation that I will be able to have overlapping assistance during the month of the move.

I am making this request for the following reason (Not required but may help: explain any circumstances you wish to share about why you need to move, difficulties you are facing, or how this assistance will help you).

This request is based on 24 CFR § 982.311, which states “If a participant family moves from an assisted unit with continued tenant-based assistance, the term of the assisted lease for the new assisted unit may begin during the month the family moves out of the first assisted unit. Overlap of the last housing assistance payment (for the month when the family moves out of the old unit) and the first assistance payment for the new unit, is not considered to constitute a duplicative housing subsidy.”

I greatly appreciate you considering my request, as this will help make it possible for me and my family to maintain housing and avoid homelessness.

Thank you,
