If you are approved for an additional bedroom, the amount you pay each month stays the same. However, the amount the housing authority pays goes up, so your voucher goes up.
How much will it go up? The answer to this question depends on the payment standards in your area. Ask your housing program for a copy of the payment standard chart, or see if it is on their website. Here’s a few examples:
If your voucher changes from one bedroom to two bedrooms, the voucher increases by a total of: $200
Two bedrooms to three bedrooms: $600
Three bedrooms to four bedrooms: $500
One bedroom to two bedrooms: $700
Two bedrooms to three bedrooms: $900
Three bedrooms to four bedrooms: $400
One bedroom to two bedrooms: $200
Two bedrooms to three bedrooms: $400
Three bedrooms to four bedrooms: $200
Will My Share of the Rent Go Up?
No. If you have a voucher and you get approved for an additional bedroom, your share of the rent stays the same. If you are already living in the apartment and you have been paying extra for the additional room, your share of the rent will go down. Will My Share of the Rent Go Up?
