Child Up to Age 18

If you have children age 18 or younger, learn how to get a stimulus payment for them here: Stimulus Check Tips for ParentsSome parents will receive stimulus checks for their children. The amount will be $500. Some parents who did not receive the $500 stimulus payment will be getting their checks in early August.

Adult Dependents

Adults who are claimed as dependents do not get stimulus checks. The person who claimed them also do not get dependent benefits.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes. There are a few things it might help you to know:

One: Just because you depend on someone, that does not mean you are a dependent for tax purposes. See details below about who is a dependent.

Two: If you stop being a dependent: If you are no longer a dependent right now, you can get your stimulus check at the end of the year. You will need to file taxes at the end of 2020. The stimulus check will be for $1,200. If you have $0 income, you can still file a tax return. If you are on disability and don’t work, you can still file a tax return.

Three: In some cases, the amount of tax benefit from having a dependent is greater than the $1,200 stimulus check.

Four: Many disabled adults on SSI do not receive their full SSI check. Learning the rules for SSI may be more helpful than the $1,200 stimulus check for some families.

All of this is explained below.

What Is a Dependent?

A dependent is any person who is anyone who is claimed as a dependent on:

  1. Someone else’s tax return or
  2. Stimulus form from IRS, TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA

Am I a Dependent?

The IRS will decide if you are dependent by looking at 2018 or 2019 tax returns and seeing if you were claimed as a dependent (reader’s report that it is not always possible to predict which year they will look at).

If someone does not qualify for a stimulus check this year, then the IRS will look at 2020 taxes to see if they qualify then.

What If I am an Adult On Social Security?

Does not matter. Either you are claimed as a dependent on someone’s taxes/stimulus form, or you are not. If you are claimed as a dependent, you are eligible for $0. If not, you are eligible for $1,200.

What If I am an Adult and My Parents Have Guardianship?

Does not matter. Either you are claimed as a dependent on their taxes/stimulus form, or you are not. If you are claimed as a dependent, you are eligible for $0. If not, you are eligible for $1,200.

What if My Parents Are My Caregivers?

Does not matter. Either you are claimed as a dependent on their taxes/stimulus form, or you are not. If you are claimed as a dependent, you are eligible for $0. If not, you are eligible for $1,20

What if I’m Disabled and Have a Representative Payee?

Does not matter. Either you are claimed as a dependent on their taxes/stimulus form, or you are not. If you are claimed as a dependent, you are eligible for $0. If not, you are eligible for $1,200.

What My Child is Collecting Social Security through a Parent?

Some children receive Social Security through survivor’s benefits (parent has died) or disability auxiliary benefits (parent is disabled).

Under age 18:

The child’s Social Security does not matter. Either the child is claimed as a dependent or they are not. Learn more: Stimulus Check Tips for Parents

If the child is claimed, the parent will receive $500. Important: The $500 is not automatic. The parent must either file taxes or sign up for a stimulus check. Three Places to Sign Up For Stimulus Checks

Age 18+:

Social Security benefits do not matter. Either the child is claimed as a dependent on taxes, or they are not. If they are claimed as a dependent, they are eligible for $0. If not, they are eligible for $1,200.

Unrelated to stimulus checks, but still important: There are many special policies and little-known regulations that can be very important for anyone on this type of benefit. Learn more: How To Navigate Disabled Adult Child Benefit

Children 18+ Who Stop Being Dependents

If the child was declared on your taxes as a dependent in 2019, they won’t be eligible this year.

If they are no longer a dependent now, at the end of 2020, they can file their own taxes and get their check at that time. If Social Security is their only income, they can still file a tax return.

To get the $1,200 payment, the child needs to:

  • Not meet the IRS definition of dependent, plus
  • File a tax return in 2020

Should I Be Claimed As a Dependent?

The IRS rules for who should be claimed as a dependents have changed in recent years: Who qualifies as a dependent?. You can also use this IRS Worksheet.

What Changes When Someone is Claimed as a Dependent?

If you are an adult and you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes, this can cause a few big changes:

  1. You will not get a stimulus check
  2. If you are over age 16, the person who claimed you will not get a child benefit for you.
  3. Your family member will get a tax break. They will pay less taxes for claiming a dependent.
  4. Being claimed as a dependent can also impact other benefits, such as Medicaid and Healthcare Marketplace subsidies.

How Much Do Taxes Change?

If you meet the IRS definition of a dependent, this can cause your family to owe less taxes. For some families, the amount that is saved in taxes is greater than the amount lost in not receiving a stimulus check.

The tax savings is different for every family. It is best to research this topic or try to consult with a tax professional to get accurate information for your family.

Here’s one way that being a claimed as a dependent can cause a big impact: If the taxpayer switches from “single” to “head of household” this can cause a large change in their taxes.

What Else Changes?

Claiming a dependent can also have a big impact on medical bills. For example, it can cause someone to either gain or lose Medicaid, depending on the family situation and the Medicaid rules in that person’s state.

For some families, medical bills and medical care is far more important than taxes or stimulus checks.

Caution

Please look at the IRS regulations above and make sure you are following them when figuring out whether or not you should to be a declared as a dependent.

Also, please be careful to be aware of the impact on taxes and healthcare when making decisions for your family.

Will the Stimulus Check Impact My Child’s Benefits?

No. The stimulus checks are being structured as tax refunds (even if you paid no taxes). Tax refunds do not count against food stamps, SNAP, CalFresh, HUD, Medicaid, TANF, SSI, healthcare marketplace credits, and most other government programs.

The stimulus check also will not count if it makes your bank account too high (it doesn’t count for 12 months).

Tips for Parents With Adult Disabled Child

If your child is a dependent, you may wish to check to see if your support is lowering their other benefits. Most of our readers report that their adult disabled child who lives at home is still able to receive maximum SSI and full or partial food stamps.

Maximum SSI $780 in most states, slightly higher in some states. $910 in California. Maximum food stamps for a child over the age of 21 is $200. Higher in Alaska and Hawaii.

Child support for adult disabled children can also lower benefits or interfere with Medicaid, unless the funds are directed into a trust:

  1. Unpaid taking care of mother age94, a probate incapacitated individual, is not easy. I stopped my job income and filled tax dependent through her and for mom because her income is just taxable and not above $50,000. She was penalized because I had no insurance so I was forced to go on medicaid that proves I qualified. Unfortunately, I don’t know why I do not qualify for the 3rd stimulus, and mom did not get any relief for having me as dependent guardian. Mother did receive her stimulus check. I get it, income gets stimulas and non-income gets no change relief.
I guess I have to withdraw my dependent status or pay for tax help in order to find relief. Good luck if you also are a dependent and not getting this 3rd pandemic relief fund.

  2. My husband ( separated now ). Filed our taxes married filing jointly. He got caught cheating for the hundredth time & thats when I broke it off with him. Due to covid I had no work so my children and I had bo choice but to continue to live with him to save money to move. Because I refuse to give him another chance he has threatened over and over to not give my two kids and myself our stimulus amount ( he filed taxes claimed us. Stimulus Money all goes to his account ) the first round he knew I wanted cash. Been talking about moving. He went to Walmart and put our whole amounts for us 3 on prepaid visa cards ( which I could not pull cash from ) and told me to deal with it. You can’t pay for deposit on an apparent with prepaid cards. Which held us back. 2nd round he was so mad that I had been jumping his ass not to screw us again that he started telling me and the kids to our faces that he wasn’t giving our money to us. That he took care if us for 8 years and that the money belonged to him. He said this so often that I was able to record him on my phone and still have the evidence. He dragged out giving the money over. $100- $ 150 per day saying that all he could pull out was 200 and I needed to deal with it. During this time my husband stopped paying the bills. While he started charging me for half of everything. 200 every week for food. Half the cable bill & 100 to pge. I agreed. I didn’t realize he wasn’t paying any of yhe bills. Pge bill is over $5000.00 water bill is &590.00
Cable got shut off. No wifi. No zoom for the kids schooling. I ended up paying $418.00 to turn it back on. I was broke. He had total control of where the small amounts of money he was giving me and he wasn’t even paying the bills.
Can I file to get a separate check for my children and self to void this from happing again? I have proof of it all. He actually was drinking one night and told me I wasn’t going anywhere. He would make sure the kids and I were her in his home long enough to be able to claim my kids and self again next year on his taxes. He’s using us for money.
Yes I would prove it. Yes I would tell the truth and yes I would report him if it would help. I just don’t know what my choices are if any. Or if he has total rights and I just need to deal with it?.

  3. It hurts that certain adult dependents still don’t qualify for the stimulus check. I was happy to hear that third stimulus was finally including adult dependents, but it was only for college students. It’s unfair. For years I haven’t been able to work or find a job. So I have to rely on my parents 😦

  5. This is either outdated or tax laws have recently changed for 2020.
All three of my adult children, ages 20 and above were claimed as dependents.
They were all three still able to get their stimulus checks on their 2020 Tax Returns.
So far they have each received their own 1800 (1200+600) either directly into their bank accounts or via Tax return.

Make sure your tax preparer knows the change in tax laws that is allowing young people who are eligible for the stimulus if they made under 4300 dollars. You also claiming them as a dependent will get credit depending on your income, if they made under 4300 in 2020.

  6. Ssdi/stimulus question!!!

I was claimed as a adult dependent on my parents 2019 taxes but I filed my own 2020 taxes after receiving ssdi, however my parents haven’t filed 2020 taxes yet so who would get the $1,400 3rd stimulus? Me since I filed my 2020 taxes or them since the irs would be going off their 2019 taxes (since my parents didn’t do 2020 yet) where I was claimed as a dependent?

Does not matter. Either you are claimed as a dependent on someone’s taxes/stimulus form, or you are not. If you are claimed as a dependent, you are eligible for $0. If not, you are eligible for $1,200.”

NOPE – Explain this situation then?
A friend of mine, who is married, filed jointly AGI 154k 2019 taxes always claimed their disabled son as dependent. The disabled special needs son receives monthly social security checks. He got the first two full amount of stimulus check to his rep payee account (parent). The Parents received their own stimulus check, a reduced amount, due to income. So what happened here? How will their situation be for the this 3rd round of stimulus checks?

I can’t even find answers to their scenario and wonder why and how the disabled son who receives social security and claimed as a dependent got the full stimulus check? hmmmm. I’m checking on the IRS website I can’t find out why.

But I didn’t get a stimulus check. How can I get my 1st $1,200 stimulus payment.? And will I be eligible for the 2nd one.?

There was a change in tax laws recently to allow this. I would speak with professional tax preparer.

      1. This article is not accurate as of Feb someone misinterpreted something somewhere.
For tax year 2018 and 2019 my boyfriend claimed me as a dependent. He did not receive the stimulus check for the dependent for the 1200 or 600. I filed taxes in Feb 2021 ( i retired early so I do not qualify for SS for another 10 yrs) just to claim the Rebate Recovery Credit. Obviously my boyfriend did not claim me for 2020.

I received $1800.00 because The stimulus checks were an advance of your tax rebate for the year 2020, I also got the 1400.00 stimulus as a separate pymt to my account within a week of President Biden signing the 3rd covid package.

Turbo Tax as well as several well known CPAs were trying to explain to people that AN ADULT DEPENDENT CAN FILE 2020 TAXES AND RECEIVE THE FIRST TWO STIMULUS CHECKS, yet NBC, As well as other large and small news outlets kept citing that you are not eligible. I have since prepared taxes for dozens of dependents to claim the RCC and all of them received 1800.00.

        Hope this helps!

So we decided to go to h&r block to remove her from being a dependent and claim herself again. So to answer your question, my mother not only received her first and second stimulus 4 weeks later after claiming herself ($1,800) but now she is also receiving her 1,400 stimulus to come this month. Go file claim yourself at a tax place asap and explain to them your situation. Hurry!!

  10. Quick question. I’m 31 and I was living with my grandmother up until the pandemic. She claimed me as a dependent on her taxes this last time around which negated me from getting the stimulus. I no longer live with her. Am I now able to receive it? I have health issues but haven’t worked in years so I haven’t filed taxes since 2016

    1. If she amends her taxes from the year she claimed you as a dependent and removes you as such, and then keeps you off the next tax return then you should get both the first and second stimulus.

  11. My mother and I live together she couldn’t afford to live on her own. I claim her on my taxes because it gives us a better return at the end of the year. Between SS and her retirement she get a whopping $824 a month that’s $5.15 an hour. She pays the electric bill and half of the grocery bills, and her cell phone. By the time that is paid she has about $300 to last her the rest of the month. Mind you she gets paid once a month. I pay half groceries and everything else. But excuse my me, she shouldn’t be excluded from the stimulus check, she deserves it just the same as anyone else. She would feel like she were in heaven if she had a little extra to spend on herself. It’s that what Trump wants people to spend money.

I checked the IRS website for my stimulus check and it was sent to an account (my dad’s account) but as said in your article, I thought if you are a dependent you do not receive one? He claimed that it said that because I claim my sister on my taxes but again I thought regardless if you are a dependent you do not receive one correct? Thank you.

I’m an adult and my mom claimed me as a dependent in 2019 and received a stimulus check in May. However, she later passed away and now for the second round of stimulus checks I was wondering what I should do? The $500 adult dependent benefit the government added would have been included in her stimulus check but now she won’t be claiming it. Am I now qualified to use the non-filers tool or do I still have to wait until 2020 to file taxes and receive it then?

My question regarding that I claimed my son in 2019 tax return, but he turns 26 years old in 2020, does my son receive the $1200 stimulus? Your response previously indicated that if he files 2020 tax return in 2021 as independent (as long as I’m no longer claim him as dependent) and he will still receive the stimulus back pay next year.

just turned 65. – In California medi-Cal states limint for SOC is 1294. So he is slightly over.
Anyway to get his income down? He is on Medi-CAL, Will they kick him to the SOC?

    1. There are two ways people frequently do this in California and it works really well….

      1. purchase some supplemental health insurance on top of medicare… looks like about $40/month would do it… but may be higher because mediCal will start paying his premiums for medicare which can raise his disability check, so take that into account…. get under the limit and he will qualify.

      2. if he works at all… even one hour per week… sign up for mediCal for working disabled. website is not clear…. disability income does NOT count for that program.

Share of cost in CA is brutal. You are right to avoid it 😊

Yet the IRS sent thousands of Checks to Prisoners IN PRISON, who were/are NOT eligible for the Stimulus Check.
I am considering contacting My State representative to help…..does anybody else have this issue? Or Problem? And how can WE get our Money?
    Thanks.

    1. Yes, Im go through the exact same thing .Only thing is I was claimed as a dependent, but that was in 2018 ,and nobody even knew anything about get stimulus money ,or of course I would not have been used as a dependent ..Im perfectly innocent ,and I could not predict the future in 2018, therefore knew nothing about what would be happening with the pandemic or receiving stimulus.. So I feel like it’s very unfair that I’m excluded from the help of stimulus.I also live on SSI ,I live alone nobody supports me but myself..I pay for my rent , utilities, food on ,$807 .a month .It’s not right .that I should be penalized from receiving help from a stimulus check , when nobody knew anything about stimulus money in 2018 ,when I was claimed as a dependent.. I’m really angry ,I / we deserve that stimulus money just like everyone else.

  27. So when you say to file at the end of 2020 if you are no longer a dependent, does that mean filing 2020 income tax? Can you actually file at the end of 2020, or can you just file before the tax deadline in 2021? Thank-you so much for your time and help.

I am a teacher with a full time job. What is going on here? Unless someone just randomly chose a SS number and listed me on their taxes, which is clearly illegal, then I am being lied to. I am not a dependent on anyone. I am not even retired. What can I do about this?

  28. Hi, I filed a non-filer return to get the stimulus payment but did not realize I would still qualify as a dependent on my tax return. Would I need to submit an amended tax return even though I am a non-filer? Or would a letter stating that it was an honest mistake and that the non-filer return should be ignored suffice?

I know I will qualify to get the $1200 stimulus check in 2021 since I am no longer a dependent in 2020 and will be required to file taxes starting next year. However, I also want to know if the same can be done for PUA benefits since I’m not eligible to receive them this year due to my dependency in 2019.

I don’t file taxes because i don’t make enough money so i used the non-filers tool on the IRS site. And all that consist of is you filling out a form that is sent to the IRS. Then after like two weeks you should get it. And the form isn’t complicated either.
I should also add that people who make literally no income qualify as well.

    1. Yes Skie, I don’t see any reason why all of you won’t receive stimulus money and you should receive your money the same way you receive your monthly benefits… If your mom doesn’t work and/or doesn’t receive benefits, then IRS may not know where to send her money… She may need to add her address and/or banking information on IRS Website in the Non-Filers section… Direct Deposit or Direct Express Card is how most people receive their money, but some people receive a check instead, even though they are set-up for Direct Deposit for their monthly benefits… Direct Deposit is the 1st choice of preferred method of receiving money direct to their Bank Account and the Direct Express Card is for those who don’t have a Bank Account… So it would be wise to set-up with Direct Deposit or DIrect Express a.s.a.p… Money comes faster these electronic payment methods…

Being disabled and unable to work isn’t easy. Most people enjoy their work, especially if it was a career they worked hard to attain. Suddenly becoming incapable of doing what you love, is a painful adjustment.
It’s not only depressing, it’s difficult adjusting to such a low fixed income, no more traveling abroad, no more affording clothes I prefer to wear, no more fine dining, etc.
If you’re cleared to work part time, the amount you can earn is capped. Going past that limit, results in a loss of benefits.
All in all, there’s a very big difference between a working income and a disability income. It’s life changing how low it is & can be very hard to adjust.
I don’t wish it on anyone, even a judgmental narrowminded troll like yourself. Consider yourself lucky, not superior.

Cash benefits I get on SSDI. So because we are unable to work we shouldn’t receive the extra help that every other American is receiving because of this pandemic? I pray you never hafta know the pain of just one bout of pancreatitis because anyone can get it it is not just from drinking too much alcohol like the stigma suggests there can be many things that trigger it could be a simple medication your Dr puts you on and if your lucky enough to die from the pancreatitis the pain you will experience will make you wish you would die and for me I have these episodes almost every month and end up getting hospitalized for treatment which consists of nothing other than intravenous pain meds and absolutely no food or drink till your lipase levels go back to normal range sometimes that takes 2 to 3 weeks and all the while although unrelated to my pancreas I suffer from seizures sometimes up to ten a day..so I’m sorry if I’m unable to work thru that which I’m sure you would be able to seeing how your so tough behind your keyboard putting down people for wanting what everyone else is getting in order to get thru this pandemic. I’ll pray for you and your family that you will never know the pain or struggles I/We suffer everyday. 61. I have a question. My boyfriend filled out the Non filer for the stimulus and he got an error code stating: “Business Rule IND-516-07- If Form 1040, ‘PrimaryClaimAsDependent’ is not checked, then the Primary SSN must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return.” He was not claimed by no one and he doesn’t claim a dependent. He said that is his correct SSN and he didn’t give it to no one so he can be claimed. If he was claimed, he does not know by whom. He was in an accident a few years ago so he didn’t file a 2018 and 2019 tax return due to his severe injuries. What can be done to correct this issue? Because I cannot get a live person on the phone from the IRS to help him. This can help him out is so many ways.

She has her own benefits like dual enrollment insurance, food stamps {$16} and pays all her own bills. Can you explain why this is?

So I was asking is it right for him to keep the money he got for her and none of it get used to on or to help her. I understand that he claims her as a dependent and all but does that really make it right? So if or when we get the next one, he gets to keep all of it to. Don’t see how that could be right is all.

If you took or take care of a child no matter what you should be claiming then. I would think doing otherwise would technically be falsified tax document and should be punishable by law

I feel that this is extremely unjustifiable for all adults that’s been filed as a dependent on someone elses taxes to no be eligible to receive their own stimulation monies their are 100% in need if not more in need of this monies to help them out threw this crisis that have been placed upon us. I feel as though they should have had enough common sense to think to implement changes to their system that would generate the differences between the ages of persons from 18 and up to not be identified so that they infact will still be eligible to receive their stimulation monies as the time is now that we adult dependents are in need of this to help aide us now while in crisis versus us having to wait until the following tax season comes along to than file taxes in order to receive their stimulation monies especially for those whom are receiving aid from social security should in fact automatically receive theirs reguardless of the fact that they are filled as an dependent on someone’s taxes ijs there have got to be a way to implement this right here right now cuz this is when the people need the assistance. I need the help now and I will continue to need help until things are back to where it used to be if not better for at this time and ages we know better so we should be doing better

  72. Hello, half way thru filling out the Non-filers Stimulus app. I received a message saying that I can’t file when someone claims you as a dependent. Well this is the first news I’ve received that someone did file me as a dependant. I have my own construction company and have lived by myself with just my dog and 2 cats for the last 2 1/2 years. I recently have been out of work cause of the Covid-19. My credit is bad and all the claims I’ve filed, from PAU UI benefits, disaster relief loans for small businesses, & the stimulus were all denied. I just recently lost my place I was living on this small ranch because the owners passed away and I was forced to move with no place to go and at the worst possible time. I was also employed at the ranch I was living on so not only did I lose my place but I lost my job too. I’m a hard working man that has been self employed for over 10 years now. And now I have no choice but to start selling all my tools and my car and truck. Thanks to this pandemic everything I’ve worked so hard for is now disappearing before my eyes. So much for living the American Dream. All of these emergency relief funds are nothing but lies and are full of false hopes. With all of these supposively funds being made available at a time of crisis, I’m pretty sure (if these funds are even real) that they were made for people who aren’t even needy. I haven’t lost my faith in God, just my Country.

I don’t understand why your PAU UI was denied? Did you receive a written denial? Was there a reason listed?

If you’ve worked and filed taxes for 2019 or 2018, you shouldn’t need to non-filers form. I don’t know why you got that message. I believe the IRS has a form someone can use to find out who claimed them, if someone did.

It appeared I met the requirements to claim him as my dependent. We married in 2019 and I filed our taxes as married filing jointly. I had to attach a statement to my 2019 tax filing and it required a paper filing. I understand the tax filing is tied up due to the pandemic and that I will wait until the IRS can safely process paper tax submissions.
Our combined income is well below the thresholds for the EIPs.
Does my spouse qualify for an EIP check?
We are ok with not receiving his EIP until we file taxes in 2020 – or should we expect his check when the 2019 paper tax form are finally processed? Or will he not qualify for any EIP?

I saw in this article you said that someone can still get the stimulus the following year if they are no longer a dependent even if they were claimed as a dependent on 2019 tax return, only if they file their taxes at the end of the year in 2020. How do you do that? I thought you could only file taxes once in the same year. I was claimed by my parents on the most recent tax return. I moved out of their house in September meaning I lived with them for at least 6 months out of 2019 making me their dependent. Apparently a lot of college students are in the same boat as me. Living on your own is hard and there is no benefit to either party when the self sufficient student is claimed. Can you please elaborate and explain to me how one can file taxes at the end of the year and get the stimulus in 2021?

At the end of this year, you can file taxes yourself (even if you have $0 income) and then get your own stimulus check.

Even if you never worked, if you had a job offer and then lost it because of the pandemic, you might be eligible for unemployment now.

Also, if your mom or the state paid you for her care, and she passed recently, you might be eligible for unemployment now.

If he decides that someone wrongly claimed him… he could report that person to the IRS. I don’t know how much trouble they will get in, or how much process it would be to correct.

If he decides it was correct for 2019 but he is no longer a dependent now, at the end of 2020 he can file his own taxes, and get his check then.

If I never get a payment then I know someone in my family (who has claimed me before) is still claiming me as a dependent, illegally, even though my last interact with this human was Dec 2016.
They are rather well off and do taxes for a living. He will always be able to Efile his own return before I can file (whoever files first with children is who gets the dependent tax break). I know he has claimed me before when he had no legal right to do so.
I can’t sue him until I can prove from the IRS that he is claiming me, if I indeed need to go down that road. My only other option is to threaten him because he doesn’t care.

      1. What I have read is that you are suppose to receive a mailing from the IRS when someone claims you. Now the address they would have is long since not where I live. The only other info I can find is an IRS fraud report. Ironically the IRS asks for the full SSN of the individual doing the fraud (how would I know this?).

As of 5/11/20 I still get payment status not available. The SSI cutoff per the SSA for the IRS is the 13th of this month for DD. If I don’t get it this week I see no reason to believe I will ever get it. And if further benefits are structured in the same way I won’t receive those either.

      2. I used the nonfilers tool even though it says if you receive SSA benefits to not do so. My tax return was rejected due to:
        “”IND-516-01

        IND-511
The primary person was claimed as a dependent or a spouse on another accepted tax return. You will not be able to file a return. “”

This proves someone is claiming me, illegally.

I need the money. Where is my stimulus check? They should have a waiver. Are people in our situations They did not get nothing for us on their income tax So we should be able to get a stimulus check like everyone else. Since we’re on Social Security It’s not fair.

    1. 18 year old – depends if she meets the IRS definition of a dependent. If you do nothing she gets $1,200. If you list her as a dependent she gets $0.

For younger daughter, if under 17 – If you do nothing, she gets $0. If you list her as a dependent, she gets $500.

    1. Stimulus checks don’t count towards SSI.

As a general rule income of a significant other usually doesn’t count anyway, unless you are married. If you have children or share finances, sometimes they treat you as married even if you are not. Are they treating you as a married couple?

Is your SO the person who claimed you?

    1. One: Just because you depend on someone, that does not mean you are a dependent. See details below about who is a dependent.

Two: If you stop being a dependent: If you are no longer a dependent, you can get your stimulus check next year. You will need to file taxes at the end of 2020. The stimulus check will be for $1,200. A person who has disability as their only income can still file taxes.

Three: In some cases, the amount of tax benefit from having a dependent is greater than the $1,200 stimulus check.

Four: Many disabled adults on SSI do not receive their full SSI check. Learning the rules for SSI may be more helpful than the $1,200 stimulus check for some families.

good question about the other kids! I’m not sure.

if anyone else supports them, they can claim them.

Or you can try the turbotax or freetaxusa sites to see if it gets through there: https://howtogeton.wordpress.com/three-places-to-sign-up-for-stimulus-checks/

            You have a few options:

            1. Ask person to amend their tax returns and give to you any money they received for your kids (if they claimed your kids). Let them know you will report them for tax fraud if they don’t do this. After the amendment is made, file tax return or sign up for stimulus payment. Sadly, may take a while, I don’t know that IRS is processing amendments now.

            2. Let person know you are filing yourself next year, and if they falsely claim you that you will report them for tax fraud. Then file taxes for 2020 and get your stimulus check next year. You can file even with no income. Again, if they claimed your kids, check for kids might go to them.

            3. Report them for tax fraud right now. Not sure how long that will take to resolve.

    1. I’m sorry I don’t know.

If you want you can contact the IRS about reporting someone for tax fraud. I don’t know if they will get in trouble. After it’s resolved, you should be able to get your check.

Or you could contact the person who illegally claimed you and ask them to amend their taxes so you don’t have to report.

Or if you are not certain it was illegal, you can do nothing. If you file taxes next year and do not get claimed as a dependent, then you get your check then.

Well it does not even pay 1// of rent never mind the other bills of business. And if store cannot open and employee does. It return then we have to pay back the money. So employee gets paid we owe it back. How does this help small businesses. Total rip-off. We are now forced to close
