How to Paint a Picture

sun-glory-susan-rienzo.jpgIn the dream world all of these things would be similar. They do not need to be word-for-word the same, but it is great if they paint a similar picture:

  • What you say to your doctor
  • What you say to the Social Security doctor
  • What you say to the Social Security judge
  • What you say to Social Security employees
  • What you write on your application forms
  • What your doctor writes on your Function forms
  • What your doctor writes in any doctor letters
  • What your friends or family members write (if they send something)
  • What your doctor writes in your records
  • What your doctor writes in your treatment notes
  • How you behave in doctor’s offices, parking lots, and waiting rooms
  • How you drive / get to doctor and Social Security appointments

Try Using the Magic Words

One way to help you stay consistent is to use the magic words. The magic words are:

  • On my worst days…..’
  • When I am in pain…
  • When I am having severe symptoms…
  • On a typical day…
  • On most days…

For example, if someone says, “I cannot walk more than ten feet” then what happens when one day that person walks eleven feet? On the other hand, if someone says, “When my symptoms are bad I cannot walk more than ten feet” this may still be true, but more flexible.
