How Long Is This Going to Take?


A typical Social Security disability timeline, complete with all the interesting things that may happen to you along the way.  This timeline is for three years. If you are able to take some steps to improve your application early on, yours may be quicker.

Initial Applications

Requests for Reconsideration

Appeals & Hearings

After a Denial

After an Approval

  • It is usually 2 to 4 months to receive your first check
  • You are sent an approval letter or see this online
  • SSI financial interview (usually)
  • You are sent award letter or see this online
  • Payment processing (1-3 months)
  • You sign up your children for benefits (for SSDI only)
  • SSA may make a small test deposit in your bank account
  • Get backpay and first check (in no particular order)
